A year following Audrey Tautou’s charming and much talked about role in Amélie, the release of Dirty Pretty Things was a surprise to Tautou fans because of the dark and uncharacteristic role for the actress. Dirty Pretty Things chronicles the desperate attempts of two immigrants to escape from London and return to their home countries. Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor) from Nigeria and Senay (Tautou) from Turkey work together at a West London hotel where drug dealing, prostitution, and black market organ trading occurs. Okwe and Senay live in constant fear of immigration officials catching up to them. In order to maintain her job, Senay is forced to perform sexual acts for her boss. When pushed to the brink, Senay decides to leave the United Kingdom, and Okwe first helps her hide from immigration police and then to acquire a passport. Directed by Stephen Frears, this thriller, has unexpected heart while offering criticism on contemporary immigration policy in the United Kingdom.
