In honor of the 40th anniversary of the making of this film, 5th Avenue Cinema is proud to present the Maysles Brothers’ film Gimme Shelter. The Maysles (Grey Gardens, Monterey Pop, Salesman) chronicled the 1969 Rolling Stones tour culminating with a grand finale concert at Altamont Speedway. The concert, dubbed “Woodstock West” and featuring The Rolling Stones, Ike & Tina, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and others, was a poorly planned affair with the Hell’s Angels handling security for the event. Unfortunately, the combination of drugs, alcohol, hippies, and Hell’s Angels are a dangerous combination, and it ended in tragedy.
