Wong Kar-wai’s atmospherically haunting masterpiece, In the Mood For Love, is a breathtaking, sensuous, and gorgeous film about desire, yearning, and the power of a whispered secret (Lost in Translation borrowed the ending; Sofia Coppola thanked Wong Kar-wai in her Oscar acceptance speech for his influence). Set in early 1960s Hong Kong, In the Mood For Love is a stunning success of mise-en-scène—every detail is beautifully orchestrated and shot with a quiet yet powerful intensity and the acting is impeccable, with Tony Leung as Chow Mo-wan and Maggie Cheung as Su Li-zhen. Maggie’s magnificent dresses (cheongsams) are reason alone to see the film.
