This exciting and mysterious film from director Joon-Ho Bong examines the situation of an extremely strong and independent mother. Played by Kim Hye-ja in a tour de force performance, she will stop at nothing to prove the innocence of her son who is charged with the murder of a teenage girl. The mother soon finds that she will get no help from the apathetic police, and the movie follows her on a journey of twists and surprises. The film's virtue lies in its unpredictability, and challenges the conventions of genre. Multilayered and psychologically dense, the film has a strange quality that is difficult to articulate. It’s also a close cultural examination of the mother’s unique role in Korean society. Mother is Bong’s most accessible film, but it may also be his finest, taking unexpected turns and leaving us with many questions.
