The City of Lost Children is an atmospheric and surreal tale of a mad scientist, unable to dream himself, who kidnaps children to steal their dreams. Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the directors of Delicatessen (and Jeunet’s Amélie), have created a gorgeous nightmare of a film. Part horror film, part Freudian psychoanalysis, part fantasy, The City of Lost Children, is a dark cinematic journey into the mind. The film’s tagline ominously reminds us of the world, “Where happily ever after is just a dream.”
